Dentures

WHAT ARE DENTURES?

Dentures (also known as false teeth) are appliances that are used as a replacement of missing teeth and tissues. They are artificial teeth which enable normal functioning of the human mouth. Dentures are of two types – Complete & Partial. Complete dentures are advised when all the teeth are missing, and partial dentures are applied when some teeth are missing. They are custom made especially for a set of teeth and gum line. Complete Dentures fit over the upper teeth and roof and on the lower teeth placed like a horseshoe. They are conventional dentures and are removed during the night for cleaning. Partial Dentures consist of replacing missing teeth attached to artificial gum connected by a metal framework which helps to hold the denture in place. Missing teeth can change the position of other teeth hence partial denture helps to overcome this problem and keep the teeth intact.

Types of Dentures

Dentures can be divided into 3 broad categories namely Complete Dentures, Partial Dentures and Implant Supported Dentures.

1. Complete Dentures

Complete Dentures are removable prosthetic devices that are used when the jaws have no teeth left. These can be conventional or immediate.

2. Partial Dentures

Partial Dentures are used when some of the natural teeth are still remaining. These partial dentures fill the gaps that are created by missing teeth. They are usually made up of Acrylic resin, Porcelain material or a combination

3. Implant-Supported Dentures

An implant-supported denture is a dental prosthesis designed to replace multiple teeth simultaneously. Unlike a conventional denture that sits on the gums, this type of denture connects to the jawbone by inserting dental implants
